What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support is an approach that puts the person at the centre and to make systems work for the person. We aim give the right support, at the right time, so people can thrive.

Positive Behaviour Support aims to understand what behaviour tells us about the needs of that person, so those needs can be met in more helpful ways.

What does quality Behaviour Support look like?

  • Holding the person at the centre of the process

  • Creating positive, fulfilling relationships

  • Looking at behaviour as meeting a need, and not as the fault of the person

  • Seeing what works and what doesn’t

  • Adding new skills and opportunities for the person

  • Working together and being on the same page

  • Using different strategies to find out what works

What does a Behaviour Support practitioner do?

A Behaviour Support Practitioner (BSP) is a professional who specialises in working with individuals who exhibit challenging behaviours or have behavioural disorders.

They conduct assessments to understand the underlying factors contributing to the behaviours and develop individualised behaviour support plans. These plans include strategies such as behaviour modification techniques, teaching replacement behaviours, and creating supportive environments.

BSPs collaborate with support teams, provide training on plan implementation, and regularly monitor progress. They work as part of multidisciplinary teams and maintain detailed documentation and reporting. Their ultimate goal is to improve the individual's behavior, quality of life, and overall well-being through evidence-based interventions and support.
